CD-ROM Problem

I have a CD-RW and DVD drive (Drive D). The DVD works fine, but I am unable to play CD ROMS. When I put the CD in I get a message saying that the PC is unable to detect a disc in the drive and it asks me to insert the disc and cancel or retry. When I explore the drive, no disc is shown as present even though one is loaded. If I keep on taking the disc in and out I can occasionally get it to work. I had this problem 6 months ago and it just went away. It has come back over the last week and I am concerned that I have a real problem. I have cleaned the drive with a cleaner, but as it seems to be working OK with DVDs I think it is a software problem. Does anyone have any experience of this?

It is more likely to be a hardware problem.. your cd drive is probably worn
out.. the fact that cd's are read in the DVD drive suggests that 1. the cd's
are ok, and 2. that XP does not have a problem because it is able to process
the cds perfectly well in the DVD drive..

You can try a cleaning disk.It will help until you are able
to buy a new cd-rw.
