CD/DVD drive problem

The CD/DVD drive on my Asus laptop will not recognise standard recordable
discs, even though it has no problem with audio CDs, DVDs and program
CD-ROMs. When I insert them into the drive it says there is nothing there.
Any ideas??

How are you trying to access the "standard recordable discs"? If you go to
a drive that has a blank disk in it using Windows Explorer this is exactly
what you will get. If you are trying to use some type of CD/DVD burning
software what software is being used?

If you are failing to read previously recorded discs from another computer,
has the disk been closed/finalized? If not you need the same recording
software on your computer.

Are these blank discs or do they have data on them?
If blank, is the drive a recorder?

There are two types of recordable DVD Disks, DVD+ and/or DVD-.
Some DVDs will recognised both types but I have seen DVD read/write
equipments which will only recognised one or the other.

(Apologies if posting this question in this thread is a mistake:)

Beginner Windows XP

Every few weeks something goes wrong with my CD drive.

It starts jumping tracks in an audio CD, and/or says it can't read a data
disk.

From the last time it happened, I have the impression that System Restore
might have solved the problem.

Is that likely?

Is System Restore dangerous?

Is there a big difference between System Restore and ALT CTRL DEL?

Thanks for any help you can give me. David in Bangkok

First, you should be creating a new post for your question, not replying to
another post.
System restore can be dangerous for the clueless, can also be a life saver.
System Restore and ALT CTRL DEL are completely unrelated and nothing like
each other.
