CD-Rom not recognized in: BIOS or Device Mgr. or my computer

Help ;)
I've got a IBM Thinkpad R40 laptop that the CD-Rom is not recognized in
the system properties or BIOS or Control Panel or Add new hardware etc...
I think that my friend selected the CD-Rom within the 'Safely Remove
Hardware' option in the system tray and now I've LOST it :) It's as if the
system disabled that port or something.
I switched the drive with a known working drive (exact same model) and
nothing is different, (no Windows auto detect, not an option to add a CD-Rom
in add hardware in control panel, nothing.....).
There are entrys in the registry for CD-Rom and I looked at the links to
the issue with High and Low Filters and I used Doug Knox's utility but
they've not fixed the issue.
All help is welcome!! I work in technology so I'm willing to try
detailed steps without fear.

More than likely this is due to a setting in your Bios, if Bios doesn't see
it, than windows won't either. I have seen security settings that lock out
access to the cd, check those.

And to clarify, I just looked on the machine with the working drive and I
dont see any configuration options in the BIOS (except boot order options) so
maybe not seeing the CD-Rom in the BIOS isnt actually a problem. I still do
have the BIG problem of not seeing the drive when the OS is loaded.......
anywere (yeah its a mystery)
Regarding Anti-Virus: I've completly disabled, or uninstalled or removed
from starting in the system tray anything that might be involved.
(insert the soundtrack to any odd suspense film here)

If it's not found in BIOS then the problem has absolutely NOTHING to
do with XP.

Ask elsewhere

It's a good idea, by the way - just to make sure that the CD is connected
properly and detected by BIOS, try to boot off it.
Next step can be calling Lenovo support, you've payed for it...

I changed the boot order and enabled the CD-Rom in the BIOS and it would
not boot using the XP installation cd. :( still not working
I have called Lenovo and they want to charge me 70$ for 1 call. I know
the drive worked within the last month and it spins up fine, no weird noise
or anything. just needs to be recognized....

Is the drive IDE ? Does it have master/slave/cable_select ?

I've read one account, where a drive had no jumpers on the back, and
the master or slave attribute was controlled by what firmware was
loaded inside the drive. Since you say it is the exact same drive,
I suppose that detail would not be changed.

it's possible that removing it, also removed the drivers for it, you might
have no choice but to pay the bucks, I would try looking on their website to
see if their is any mention of needing drivers to access the CD

it does talk of needing specific drivers for the cd drive, and gives a
location to download them.

I can't imagine how drivers have anything to do with this. OP
couldn't even boot from the device. Doing that requires no drivers.
In other words, the drive fails BEFORE it ever gets to Windows, where
the drivers are.

This is either a BIOS problem (seems unlikely at this point), the
connector, or the motherboard. Problems with the drive were ruled out
when OP swapped the drive with a known-good one. If BIOS settings
have not been returned to "default" yet, that would be my next
troubleshooting step. If that does nothing, then it's probably going
to be necessary to send it to Lenovo if it's under warranty or a
Lenovo-certified repair shop if not.

A continuation to this laptop CD drive problem. These laptop CD drives may
not have physical jumpers. The setting of Master / Slave drive "jumper" is
done electronically within the drive's firmware. It is important to only do
firmware updates from the correct firmware update package intended for the
exact model of laptop / drive.

Was any "firmware" update done on this laptop / CD drive?

The BIOS of these laptops are very "simple".  They don't have any
"normal" BIOS options that allow you to enable/disable the cd-rom.  

The only other way to test them would be to try to boot from cd.  Next
time I have the laptop in front of me (it is used by another user), I
will have to try this.

As for the Firmware updates; no updates have been made to the cd-rom's
firmware.  However, I did burn the bootable firmware disc, so I can try
that as well and see if the firmware fixes it or not.  However, if the
BIOS doesn't detect the cd-rom, then I can't boot from the firmware
disc.

I thought about importing registry entries from another laptop of the
same type which is working and see if that fixes it as well.

Other than that, I don't know, I figure it's probably a motherboard
issue.

If the BIOS is not seeing the drive, the no software changes or
registry "patching" will ever make the CD drive show up. It must show
up in the BIOS before any versions of Windows can see it. Therefore,
if no "firmware" update was ever done, then their is a physical
problem with the drive. You might be able to locate a replacement
drive over the web.

Go to the Hardware Monitor page in the BIOS setup screens.

Is one of the cooling fans running at too low RPMs ?

Is one of the power supply voltages an abnormal value ?

The hardware monitor checks these things, and the BIOS
will stop if a problem is detected. The F1 prompt
appears, to ask you to check the BIOS screens.

On my computer, I don't find jpeg.dll in the regular Windows folders.

I have it in a Java-related folder used by a large program.

The jpeg.dll could be part of Java AWT, being used by a program,
and stored somewhere in that program's install folder. So when the
program installs, the program comes with its own Java stuff.
Reinstalling the program, may reinstall the Java components.
If one of the Java components was attacked by malware, and removed
by your AV software, perhaps the jpeg.dll file was quarantined and
is no longer present in its original software folder.

Like the error message says, "You must reinstall this program", because
the missing file is part of the program's software package. That is
my guess.

Now you have to figure out, what program is writing the message on
the screen. That is the program that needs to be reinstalled (or
repaired).
