CD-ROM not recognized

The DVD-ROM that was preinstalled on my laptop is no longer recognized by the
computer. I have run the troubleshooter, have uninstalled the DVD-ROM and
tried to reinstall it. The computer says "found new hardware" and locates
the correct dvd-rom but is unable to install it without errors. I have also
tried to install new drivers but that did not solve the problem. When I
click on My Computer, ther is still no D Drive. Any ideas?

After I click on Add Hardware, I get a message that says Found New Hardware
Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R2412. Then after I run the Install Wizard, the message
says "A problem occurred during hardware installation. Your new hardware
might not work properly." There is a little yellow error icon at the
beginning of the device name. I finish the install wizard. When I click on
My Computer, there is no D Drive.

First I'd suggest that you try the Upper/Lower filters patch found at:
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php#problems

After using it, reboot and see if the problem disappears.

Have you recently installed/uninstalled Roxio or Nero? They don't play
nicely together and installing one after removing the other generally
results in 'issues'.
