I just realized that I lost access to both my CD ROM Drivers. It happened
once before and I got it back by deleting something in the registry but I
cannot do it now. Can someone help?

Hi,

Try this:

Go to Start => Run and type in "regedit" {without the quotes}

Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
and select the key
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Go to File => Export

In the Export Registry File dialog box, select Selected Branch under
Export Range; give the file a name and Save to save the file to the
Desktop.

In the right panel fot the above key, select LowerFilters, and then
choose Edit => Delete. Click Yes in the Confirm Key Delete dialog box.

Select the UpperFilters line, and then choose Edit => Delete. Click Yes
in the Confirm Key Delete dialog box.

Close the Registry Editor.

Restart Windows.

Thanks, Claymore. This was exactly what I did last time but it did not work
this time. I went to device manager and the computer does not see any of the
CD drivers although the CD drawer is still working meaning it got power. BTW,
my computer sits still for nearly 15 minutes everytime it starts. Maybe it is
looking for the missing drivers.

Does the BIOS see the drives? Did the device manager show the drives but
not show drivers?
Backup generic drivers are supposed to be located in the \i386 folder. Are
there any somewhere in \i386?

Hi txz, have you had any luck fixing the problem.?

I have got exactly the same problem, DVD player and
DVD RW not being seen in the bios but both have power going to them.

It seemed to have happened after an overnight update, the shortcuts on my
toolbar have now got a red circle with a question mark on them.

No, it is not even shown in the device manager list. Now I've got a worse
problem, the C drive is failing on me. the system asks me to CHKDSK, but how
can I do that without starting the computer. (I was preparing to reinstall
the system only to discover that my CD drive died.
