CD-ROM drive icon not detected, disappeared!

My CD ROM Drive icon keeps disappearing. When I open my computer, it will
show the C and D drive but not the cd rom drive. So, when i insert a cd,
nothing appears and i have no way of opening it. The computer does sound as
if it's "reading" it though.

in trying to solve this problem, Windows help section told me to UnInstall
and Re-install the D Drive. This worked once. but, after a few days the icon
disappeared again. And, this time the un install trick hasn't worked.

I haven't added any additional hardware to my computer that would cause
this.
