cd rom drive not recognised by computer

Our cd rom drive that came installed with the computer stopped reading cds. I
replaced the complete unit with a working spare, but still same problem. In
the My Computer window the "drive D:" icon doesn't appear. It is as if the
drive doesnt exist. Any help would be much appreciated thankyou.
