i upgraded to xp service pack 2 recently and when i did my cd drive stoped
working. It would show up under my computer but would only work for about 10
min. now it doesnt work at all. Ive also put in a new hard drive and thats
what my xp was put on. if i switch hard drives the cd drive will work on that
one which runs on windows 98. is there anything i can do to fix this or do i
need a new cd drive all together.

First try this unplug the cd rom and bootup xp, then shut down and reconnect
the cd rom and bootup and let xp find the cd rom and install it. If its not
installed goto the device manager and look at the cd rom to see if anything
is wrong there. If not click on the Hardware wizard and try installing
yourself. If it does not install ask a friend if he has a extra cd rom and
try it in your system to see if xp will install it.

This is most likely caused by an incompatible CD recording software / driver
installed in your system. The following KB article should help.

CD-ROM access is missing and messages cite error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19,
Code 39, or Code 41 after you remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP:

"Incorrect Function" Error Message When You Access the CD-ROM Drive, DVD-ROM
Drive, or CD-RW Drive:

If you have installed an earlier version of Roxio Easy CD Creator, uninstall
it and apply this fix:
