CD-ROM and DVD-ROM Access Is Lost

What was done:
The OS is Windows XP Home Edition. I recently applied Service Pack 2 and
all the High Priority updates that followed. Then I upgraded my Norton
AntiVirus 2004 to 2005.

Symptoms:
If I place a CD-ROM and/or DVD-ROM into the drive(s) during boot-up, I can
see them appear when I open My Computer. I can install programs and access
files on them.
However, as soon as I eject the CD/DVD and insert the same or different
CD/DVD, then the drive no longer can access any media.
When I insert a disc, it spins but the icons don't change in My Computer.
Double-clicking on the CD/DVD icons will prompt me to insert something into
the drive.
If I reboot the PC with a CD/DVD in the trays, then I will be able to access
them again as long as I don't eject them.

What I've tried so far:
- Examined drivers for both devices. They're status is working properly.
No change in the drivers.

What I've not tried:
- Un-installing Norton AntiVirus 2005

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Jim L.
