CD-R drive not responding

It won't even open... The device diagnostic thing says it's working fine. Any
ideas? I have: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2000+, Windows xp. The cd-r drive is built
in.

"It won't even open" as in... the tray does not open and close? If yes, its
mechanism may have failed. Usually cheaper to replace than to have it
repaired.
