OK getting closer to a solution I hope,

Dad has an opti storage OPCRW5224

He was using Windows 98 and burning discs with Nero with no problems

after a couple of sound glitches he upgraded to Windows ME

Now the system is only recognising the cd burner as a cd reader?

We installed hotburn and it says "hotburn did not detect a cd-R/RW in your system - when I looked in the sections that says what is installed it shows the Opti Storage but in the CD reader section and I can't move it.

Can someone possibly tell me how to make it re-recognise the Cd/RW correctly again.

Thanks

Yes, go back to Win 98, it was a better operating system than ME.

Or change to XP.

Although to be honest, looking between the lines, I'd say the sound glitches were probably caused by hardware rather than software problems. That's probably a very old CD burner and may very well be faulty.

The sound glitches were probably created when the drive was in it's death throes.

A new DVDRW is around £20.00.

Try deleting the drivers for the optical drive in the device manager and then reboot your pc, this forces the drivers to be re-installed. If this doesnt help matters then you can generally pick up a CD-RW for around £8-00 new, or a DVD-RW for £20-00 new
