I have an XP Home SP2 machine that is having problems playing CD-ROM's. When
I insert a "burned" CD, the computer recognizes it and everything is fine.
But when I insert an "original" CD (ie. store-bought music, program, game,
etc.) the computer does not even recognize that the disk is there. Any
ideas as to what is going on. Thanks for any ideas!

Your CD drive is dying, replace it.

You may just need to clean the lens in your CD drive. Cleaning disks are
widely available and low cost. Suggest you try cleaning before replacing.
