CD error

My CD is missing. I am not a techie but have been trying to solve problem by
reading the help articles as well as other computer users' questions with
this problem. However, I need to ask for help. I am using a Dell Inspiron
6000, Windows IE7, XP SP2. I can play a DVD but cannot add a program or play
a CD. I noticed the problem when I lost my printer and needed to reinstall.
I read through MS article 314096, How to troubleshoot CD and found that the
Event Log indicates a error in my CD Rom. I clicked on properties and the
message reads: The device,\CDRom0, has a bad block. What can I do to fix
this?

This is a hardware problem, and as far as I know the only fix is a new
drive. However, I advise you to take the computer to a repair facility
(other than Best Buy and their kin) for help.

A new drive from Dell costs $115, and it is user installable.
