CD/DVD Won't Play Automatically

When I load a CD or DVD it does not automatically start up. The association
is there and they will play if I open the CD/DVD then click on the song or
the video.

When I look at the properties of the CD/DVD player to try and set the
AutoPlay “action to perform†I don’t get any options. The window below the
“Select an action to perform†does not display any actions. The big window is
blank. If I select the Select an action or Prompt me each time, the apply tab
stays grayed out. The Restore Defaults tab is also grayed out.

Any suggestions?

I used HELP from the Start Menu - Autoplay and found this:

To change how your computer handles multimedia content
Open My Computer.

Under Devices with Removable Storage, right-click the device you want, such
as a digital camera or CD-ROM drive, and then click Properties.

On the AutoPlay tab, click the multimedia content type you want to change.

Under Actions, click the action you want Windows to perform when it detects
the media type you selected.

Notes

To open My Computer, click Start, and then click My Computer.

Your removable storage device must be attached to your computer for it to
appear in the My Computer folder.

JustUs, if you read the end of my message I did try exactly that but I don't
get any choices. Also no matter what I select the Apply tab is grayed out as
is the Restore Defaults tab.

There is another program that allows you to select the autoplay option -
Tweakui. It is part of the power toys from MS. That is what I used "years"
ago when I had difficulties with the same.

I apologize for the previous post - didn't read as close as I should have.

Jason, I tried Autofix.exe without success. It says there are problems but it
can't identify or fix them. I have a CD/DVD-R and a CD/DVD-RW and they both
play just fine just not automatically. I think the problem is pure software
in that I can't set the AutoPlay options in the properties of the removable
devices.

Just a thought,

Are you logged on as an administrator or as a limited account. If you are
logged on as a limited account, then the repair utility will not be able to
fix ithe problem.

Also, you might try logging into safe mode and then running the repair
utility. Files are often in use and can't be repaired but logging into safe
mode should help.

Jeff, yes I have administrator access. It's my home computer. I tried running
autofix.exe in safe mode with the same results. It finds problems but can't
fit it.

Just to let everyone know my skill level is pretty high. I'm an IT
Professional and a CNE.
