CD&DVD drives vanished

At the begining of December I put a DVD+R into my DVD drive and then a few
minutes later I noticed that both my CD and DVD drives were gone. I went into
System Restore and resoted my computer to an earlier time but nothing
changed. So then I tried installing the XP_CD-DVD-Fix file but still no dice.
I went into BIOS and saw that the drives were there. Then someone suggested
that I go into Safe Mode and find the drives in the Device Manager. The
drives weren't there. I miss my drives. I know that the easy way out would be
to do a System Restore but that isn't even all that easy for me. I have some
20 GB of files that I need to keep and I don't have anything that will store
that much. Please please help me.
