CD/DVD Driver

The CD/DVD icon on my desktop has disappeared, the
hardware is ok as I can boot up from the CD. For some
reason Windows doesn't know that the CD/DVD is present
(even if I check for new hardware it doesn't pick them
up). I have been told the only way around this is to
reinstall Windows, I don't want to do this as it takes
ages to set everything up as I've got it (scanners,
users, emails etc etc) - anyone got any ideas of a fix?

Probably some obsolete driver (maybe part of old burning software) has
been deleted, leaving a hanging reference in registry - when at boot
this cannot be satisfied, the system leaves the device out. To tidy up,
get a registry patch file, cdgone.reg, from
www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip, extract it, r-click on it and merge
it into the registry

You will then need to reinstall any burning software that you use.
