cd/dvd drive troubles

To begin with, I have a HP Pavilion a320n with Windows service pack 2.
Unfortunately my pc is no longer under warranty. The cd/dvd drives will not
read any disks at this point. After searching these forums, I took other
posters advice and in the device mananger I deleted both drives, hoping the
drivers would be reinstalled. Now it shows 4 drives instead of 2. When
shutting down the computer I get an error message that comes and goes so
fast, I cannot get the full error name. I believe it is something like
WindowsFormPArking or something to that effect. In the meantime, I have disks
I need to install-which of course, the cd/dvd drives won't read.

Does anyone know of a HP support forum or newsgroup? I cannot find one on
their site and a Google search doesn't do me any good. When I search for
updated drivers for the cd/dvd drives it lists so many that I'm not sure
which ones are mine. Looking in device manager doesn't do any good either. I
must be missing something here.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
[Start > Run and type: REGEDIT , and hit enter]

2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

6. Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value,
if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need
to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.

7. Restart your computer.

I'm a little leary of trying Carey's regedit way to fix, but just about
desperate enough to try it. If all else fails, it might be I need new drives.

What burning/dvd/cd software are you using, if any? It may need to be
updated..As a last resort your CD/DVD devices firmware may need to be
updated..

You might try this option, download cdgone.zip and backup your registry to
be safe
(read the readme file) and merge the cdgone.reg (right click, merge) file to
the
registry and reboot the computer. This should clear up the problem(s) in the
registry as relates to dvd/cd devices, though
you will also have to reinstall any third party cd/dvd related burning apps
etc.. if they are required or needed, it's your choice..
