CD-DVD rw combo drive

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2. I was able to read and write CDs and DVD
without problems until recently. I contracted some really nasty spyware
that I could not remove so I completely wiped my hard drive, deleted all
partitions, re-created them and installed Win XP Pro and updated to service
pack 2. Since then my CD DVD writer will not recognize any disk that I
insert. It is me secondary optical drive. I also have a CD DVD reader as
the primary optical drive. When I put in a disk, either a blank or program
disk, I get flickering activity light and then the light will go solid I
cannot do anything with the computer till the light goes out and I get an
error that the CD/DVD is unreadable. The other drive is OK.

Any Ideas?

so you have 2 devices? 1 that reads and the other that can write? it might
help to go ahead and disconnect them from the computer. run your computer a
couple of times without them. when you think windows is running a-ok and you
see absolutely no indication of there existence in the devices, then shut the
pc down, remove the electricity and reconnect 1 of them only. run the pc and
check that windows is a-ok with that one device and win is updated with all
necessary drivers for the device and or install the cd's that came with the
device. if win is ok, then shut it down, and install the other and let
windows begin adding this device and or install the cd for this device. this
should bring you back.

Did you also reinstall the software that controls you DVD/RW, like DLA or
Easy CD Creator?
