When I put a CD into my disk drive I normally get a command box asking which
program i would like the CD to be opened in, however, now when i put in a CD,
the drive makes a noise as if loading but no command box appears and in 'my
computer' it does not recognise that the drive is in use and there is a CD
there. Please help.

In "My Computer", right-click the CD-ROM drive, click Properties,
AutoStart tab, and make your selections.

In addition to Joe's suggestion (you may have selected "Take No Action" as your
default action), tell us, does this happen with all types of CDs (audio, data,
home-burned, commercial), and in My Computer does it not show any disc label/name
for the CD drive when there is a disc inserted?

In Device Manager (right-click My Computer, click Properties> Device Manager tab),
does it show the entries under DVD/CD-ROM Drives as working OK with no problems?
Also for IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers?

Are you using XP Home or XP Pro?
Will an inexpensive audio cleaning CD work if you insert it?

Do you have TweakUI XP installed, and have you used it to disable autoplay for your
CD drive?
