cd drive not recognizing CD

Can anyone help with this problem?

I have no other software installed - I just got this computer- do I need any
additional software other than the cd writing wizard?
I see the cd I am writing to as drive d:\
while it also shows the DVD/CDRW drive D:\ as where the files are awaiting
to be written to the CD. Could there be some conflict there?

Boot with a bootdisk that has cdrom drivers. See if you can read the
disk and open files. If so, then at least you know the hardware is OK.
If not, then you have a hardware problem.
