CD drive not recognizing CD

When using CD burning wizard, the burn function will not complete because I
get the message there is no disk in the drive. Insert a writable CD. I have
tried all kinds of CD's and I have a Sony CDRW/DVD CRX330E on a new
Optiplex170L windowa xp pro.

I had this on another Dell about a year ago and can't remember how I got it
to work - but the other Dell is working fine still

Hi Ted,

Do you have some other third-party burning software installed? If so, it
will conflict with the imapi burning engine included with WinXP. If this is
the case, you should disable the native burning software and use the
third-party program.

Thanks for the reply
I have no other software installed - I just got this computer- do I need any
additional software other than the cd writing wizard?
I see the cd I am writing to as drive d:\
while it also shows the DVD/CDRW drive D:\ as where the files are awaiting
to be written to the CD. Could there be some conflict there?

Hi Ted,

Click start/run, type cmd and click ok. From the prompt, run:

net start imapi

Then retry it.

I'm having the same problem with my CD writer - I insert a blank CD and when
I try to open the CD drive it prompts me to insert a CD, even though there is
already one in the drive. Or use the Roxio Easy CD Creator on my computer to
make a data CD, and click format CD I get the following error message:
Unknown error. Drive reported an unknown error (0x17) You will not be able to
read and write to the CD through drive letter acccess. In additon, when I
click on properites for the inserted CD it tells me there is 0 free space,
although it should read 800 MB or so. Any suggestions?

Sorry I can't help - but I hope an informed someone replies soon as I've got
urgent files that need to be copied!

Your explanation is exactly what is going on with my machine, the main
problem is that I've tried just about everything else that has been suggested
in similar posts...
