CD Burner problem

Mikey

I have a Lite-On LTR 48246S CD Burner and have developed the following
problem. It will not burn onto a CD-R...it just cycles up and down
perpetually. I even tried updating the firmware which made the problem
worse. Now if there is a CD in the drive when I boot up, the burner tries to
access the disk and the machine will continually reboot. I suspect I have
some damaged/missing files as I was using one of those "registry cleaner"
programs and that may have caused the problem so I'm not sure it is actually
a problem with the drive itself.

The computer is an AMD Athlon 2100+, 40 Gb HD, 512 Mb RAM running Win XP
Prof.

Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated!

Mike

Have you tried to uninstall the drive from device mgr, and rebooting,
letting windows re-install it?

That was a good suggestion but it didn't work. If there is a CD-RW in the
drive when I boot up it still will perpetually reboot. If I put in the CD-RW
when the machine is running, it tries to access the CD, I get a very fast
BSOD with a lot of numbers on it (it only flashes for a fraction of a
second) and the machine reboots. My CD-ROM in the other drive bay seems to
work fine. Any other ideas?

Just curious, do you have the "Automatically restart" unchecked, so that
when your system reboots after a system failure, it goes to the BOS with the
error code?

For this; Rt Click My Computer, Properties, Advanced Tab, Startup & recovery
"Settings", Under system failure, uncheck "automatically restart", and
OK...The next time your system randomly reboots, it will give you a blue
screen with an error code.

Sorry, I meant BSOD, not BOS...also, have you tried to clean the drive with
an optical cleaner? This most likely doesn't have anything to do with your
situation, but...

Sorry, Also, since you said you ran a reg editor, I don't know if this will
help, but for missing files it works...you may try putting the XP CD in
*while booted up*, close it out when it opens, and go to Start>Run> type sfc
/scannow (With a space between the "c" & " / " ). I have never tried this
with possible reg issues, but what do you have to lose?

I'll probably try the system file checker routine but first I need to find
my WIN XP disk. I don't have an optical cleaner but I'll see if I can blow
any dust outta there. Also I unchecked the "restart automatically" box and
here's most of the error message I got:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent
damage....etc.

STOP: 0X00000023 (0X000E00E0, 0XF8C69708, 0XF8C69408, 0XF0BB29BC)
fast.sys - Address 0BB29BC base at F0BAF000, Datestamp 3d6de58d

Beginning Memory Dump...

and so on...

I also did a chkdsk operation and nothing showed up. Other than this the
machine runs pretty well. However, I think I see a "format c:" in my near
future...::::sigh::::
