caught in a re-boot loop

Bruce Stollmack

i recently re-installed Xp Pro on my sister's Dell PIV machine. its has
worked fine for 3 weeks, but now she tells me she's can't get the machine
into windows. it keeps going saying windows wasn't shut down properly and
offers 5 choices for re-boot ( safe mode, safe mode w/prompt, etc.) no
matter which she chooses it keeps returning to the same screen. any thought
on how to break thru?

Hi

If the PC can't be accessed via any of those options - including 'Last Known
Good Configuration - then your sister will have to try a 'Repair' install of
XP. The following article by Michael Stevens will help:

Try booting to xp cd (sometimes needs to be adjusted in BIOS,boot tab, device
priority,or similiar),then at info page press R for recovery, press enter
key for
password,then type:CHKDSK C: /R When its thru type:EXIT Let xp restart,and
remove cd.
