Cascading folder shortcuts on "My Documents" menu?

E

Ed

I have shortcuts to various network folders within my "My documents"
folder. The idea is to have them simulate actual folders, so that when
I open "My Documents" via the start menu, I will be able to explore
downwards through the folders, even if they are only referenced via a
shortcut.

This works on the start menu "Programs" folder, but for some reason the
"My Documents" menu item behaves differently, opening explorer windows
rather than menu sheets. It is infuriating!

Does anyone have a fix for this? Perhaps a reg hack or some way of
altering the shortcut to make it cascade rather than opening an
explorer window.

Thanks
Ed

You're halfway there, Ed :)

The shortcuts created when you right-click+drag a folder to the Start Menu (or any of its
subfolders) are different than shortcuts created via New Shortcut Wizard or right-click+drag to an
ordinary folder. Two easy ways to discern the differences:

1) View the item's property page -- ordinary shortcuts have 3 tabs (General, Shortcut, Security)
while the shortcuts in the Start Menu will only have one tab (General)

2) A detail view of the folder containing the Shortcut will show a type of "Shortcut" for an
ordinary (.lnk file) shortcut and a type of "Folder" for the Start Menu shortcut.

The nice thing is that the Start Menu shortcuts can be moved after they are created and they will
retain the 'true folder' behavior. So, to accomplish what you want:

1) Open an explorer window to your Start Menu or one of its subfolders

2) Open another explorer window to your network.

3) right-click+drag, 'Create Shortcut' for all the network folders you want.

4) Move the newly created shortcuts from the Start Menu folder to your My Documents folder.

Good Luck,
Keith
