Carpet Cleaner

Can anyone suggest a carpet cleaning machine that i can buy or hire?
Had a local company clean a couple of carpets and suite... disaster.
Cost me a new suite.
They say its not their problem.
Rather than go down the blame route would like to do it myself.
Any recommendations?
