card reader trouble

Hi I'm using XP with sp2. The machine has a card reader this reads the card
from my camera fine and everything works until I remove it. I told the
machine to use safe removal and now it insists the card is still there. Non
of the removable drives show up and when I look in device manager it says
can't use drive has not been removed. Any ideas what is wrong. Don't be
afraid to state the obvious.

Can the card reader be removed easily (IE is it connected via USB). If
so, remove it, reboot and then reconnect it and then do it the way XP
suggests by using safe removal.
