problem with flash memory card reader

I just upgraded my Windows XP home to Windows XP Pro yesterday. And my flash
card reader never shows new volumes in "My Computer" anymore.
I checked device manager, all the readers are properly installed and have no
problem at all.
In disk manager, the disk can be recognized but no volume letter assigned. I
tried to manually assign a drive letter and this error pops up: The operation
did not complete because the partition or volume is not enabled. To enable
the partition or volume, restart the computer. (dialog title: Logical Disk
Manager).
I restart the computer many times and it still doesn't work. I checked
device manager, all the drives are enabled.
I tried to connect a USB harddrive to any one of the USB port and it works
fine: new drive letter assigned and I can see it in "My computer" with no
problem.
It seems only card reader has this problem.
I tried two card readers: one Zio CF/MMC/SD card reader, another is the
integrated CF/MMC/SD/MS reader in my Dell 2405FPW LCD. Both have the same
problem.
In my previous Windows XP Home, the card readers worked just fine.
Please someone can figure out what's wrong with it? Thanks in advance.

John:
thank you for the reply. I read all the links you gave me. But none of
them can fix my problem.
some updates: I tried to keep the memory card inside the reader and the
reader connected to the computer through USB, then restart the computer.
After restart, I can MANUALLY assign a drive letter to the card using "disk
management", but still it can not be automatically done and even after the
drive letter is assigned, my windows explorer can not show the new drive. I
can access it via DOS command line though.
If I plug the card when the computer is already on, it never allows me
to even manually assign a drive letter saying the volume or partition is not
enabled. Windows will not assign drive letter nor display the drive in
explorer.
Do I have to restart everytime when I need to plug a memory card and
only access it through DOS command line? Must be something I can do. I tried
TweakUI.exe already, no help. :(

Sorry, I don't have a solution for you.

Maybe someone else will have some

Go here: http://www.xeroxscanners.com/default.asp?pageid=590

Then download "Hidden Devices".

Before doing any of this, create a System Restore Point in case you screw
anything up.

After the Device Manager opens, from the View menu, select "Show hidden
devices".

Look for any devices with a yellow exclamation mark. If they are USB
devices, delete them. Also delete any USB devices with a red X next to them.
Then, reboot.

This has helped me with other USB problems.

In device manager, I do not know how to find the particular USB devices
associated with the card reader.

Steve:
Thanks for sharing your solution. I tried it and it still can't solve
my problem. I think my USB card reader's driver is properly installed. It
must be something wrong with the logical drive management I suspect.

Some updates:
I checked all the drivers and hidden devices, seems the driver is ok. All
program can access the memory card including: dos command line console, WD
disk diagnostic, I can even format it under dos. Seems only windows explorer
doesn't accept it.

I have a USB harddisk, it works perfect with my computer. I also have a
Sanddisk Ultra II 1GB SD card with a build-in USB port, it doesn't work
either! Seems the windows explorer only doesn't like flash memory, everything
else is ok. It should not be a problem of USB or driver or volume manager or
disk manager. Must be something wrong with the component to deal with flash
memory in windows explorer.

Still searching for solution now. I will update when I find anything.

Have you tried another USB port on the computer?

Have you tried it after rebooting?

All have been tried. Actually, the memory card can be accessed through DOS
command line. Only it can't be accessed through windows explorer.

And all the services running in my computer have been compared to another
WinXP Pro system which works fine with memory card reader and nothing wrong
has been found. That means it is not because of any background service error.
Need to emphasize, USB hard disk works fine with my system. It should not be
anything wrong with the USB port or the card reader, must be something wrong
with the disk management of windows explorer.

Problem solved:
That's because I failed to install daemon tools 4.0.3 and the installation
left some driver files in windows/system32/driver/
three files:
sptd.sys
sptd1111.sys (1111 could be any number)
secdrv.sys

Delete them and restart! YEAH!!!

It's a CD image drive software. I play online game Battlefield 2 but I don't
want to load the CD everytime, so I use daemon tools to load a very tiny CD
image from harddisk everytime, it is faster and more convenient.

I read the solution in another thread in Windows XP Hardware forum.
