SD Card Readers

I have one of these 8 in 1 camera card readers. It works fine with
the SD cards. I can use it in Win2000 (without the need to install
drivers), or I can use it in Win98se with a driver install.
However, I bought a 4GB SDHC card. It works fine in the camera, but
it will not read on this card reader, in fact as soon as I stick the
card in the reader, the computer freezes until I remove the card or
unplug the the reader. Actually, Win98 will freeze everything. thile
Win2000 just freezes up the card reader portion of the screen. Either
way, I cant read this card.

Do these SDHC cards require a different reader, or what?

Yes that was my experience with a SDHC card.

Unless the reader docs specifically state that it's SDHC compatible, the
answer is almost certainly 'yes' (you do require a different reader).

SDHC and SDSC (the original SD format) use different block sizes as well
as the protocol for reporting the capacity. Earlier readers cannot
access the SDHC cards.

Moreover, even if you get a new reader you need the corresponding
Windows driver version. This is unlikely to be a problem with Win2K but
conceivably might be with Win98 unless the reader manufacturer provides one.

At that, you could count yourself lucky. These readers are pretty
inexpensive. The same incompatibility problems also exist with earlier
devices that use SD cards (e.g. cameras).
