Capture freezes immediately but on DV-AVI only?!

Basically, I have a JVC GR-DVL120A connected via FireWire to my PC.
The FireWire port is built in to my motherboard (Asus A7N8X Deluxe)
and I am running Windows XP Home SP2 with all Windows updates applied.
I have 1024Mb of fast RAM, 120Gb Serial ATA HD with 80Gb spare
(defragged) and a Athlon 2600 CPU.

I can successfully capture in all other formats (e.g. High Quality PAL
(.wmv)), but whenever I try DV-AVI (which I want for top quality),
when I click 'Start Capture', the program instantly hangs and goes to
'Not Responding'. I can't even get to task manager and have to hard
reset the PC.

I have flashed the BIOS to the latest level and also updated the
firmware of the SATA controller to the latest level (its a Silicon
Image 3112). I have also found a article from Microsoft called
'IEEE1394 performance degrades after installing SP2' which includes a
fix to correct 1394 speeds. I've ran the fix and the problem still
persists. I have had this problem with a previous camcorder so I
don't think its the JVC camcorder.

Any advice on how to proceed is much appreciated - at present I have
to capture in a lower quality setting.
