caption types change automatically to one type only

I have figures and tables in my document.
All the caption labels change to either tables or figures.
What must I do to have 2 caption types labelled figures and tables with the
types numbered seperately from each other?

When do they change? The caption tool merely inserts sequence fields to set
the numbering eg
Table { SEQ Table \* ARABIC } for the table and
Figure { SEQ Figure \* ARABIC }for the figures
These shouldn't change once inserted. However, when you are working with
more than one numbering sequence, Word doesn't know which to use for a
particular reference, so offers the last used one. If you want something
different, you must select it.
