Caption Numbering policies

Guest

I have two document templates. When I create documents from template1,
I want the caption numbers to include the chapter number. For documents
created
from template2, I don't want chapter number in the captions. My problem is
that
when I change the Caption Numbering for one of the templates, I seem to
unintentionally change it for the other.

I am using Word 2002 SP3. Is the Caption Numbering policy associated with a
template? Is it possible to make it automatically behave properly for my two
circumstances?

Thank you in advance for any advice.

Sounds like you have changed Normal.dot.

Hi =?Utf-8?B?TWFyayBVcmlzaA==?=,

For some weird reason I don't know, MS decided to make the caption numbering
format specific to the application, and not the template. So the "simple"
answer is, you're always going to have to make the change manually.

The more "advanced" answer is:
- Captions are a combination of plain text (the "label"), the style
("caption") and fields (control the numbering). You can insert a caption (not
text, just basic stuff), formatted as you prefer, then select the entire
paragraph. Use Insert/AutoText/AutoText to "add" this to the AutoText entries
*in the specific template*. Give it a longish (5 or more characters) name
that's unique. Now, instead of using Insert/References/Caption, you can insert
the AutoText entry - and it will not switch to whatever setting is currently
active for the Word application.

G'day Cindy M -WordMVP- <[email protected]>,

Yeah, my preferred solution is to customize the style to use List
Numbering - it is one of the few lists in the document that DOESN'T
restart and so is PERFECT for List Templates. <Shakes head in disgust>
Why did they use Seq fields?

The major problem is, we only have the el crappo B&N GUI for our poor
users to screw things up royally with. 90% of the time attempts to
link caption numbering in end up linking to a standard list bullet /
number style. (Eg kiddies, use VBA! Much safer.)

The caption under the picture of the guy responsible for that decision
must surely read "MORON".
