Can't use java RTE 6 on Vista

I have Java RTE 6, Version 3 on my computer but websites do not recognize it
and it's not even in my program toolbar. I went to get the firefox plugin
from the Java website and while it was testing my JRE, it couldn't find it on
my system. So, I go to install it and it says its already been installed. I
have reinstalled this about 3 times and still nothing when I get to java
websites. It's just a white screen where the java applet is supposed to be
running. I've tried on IE also and it doesn't work there either.

Very frustrating....can anyone help?

UPDATE:

firefox finally prompted me to install the java plugin, but when I went to
install it through the firefox interface I kept getting this error:

That sounds like a problem with the XPI package.

-203 is XPI error "TOO_MANY_CERTIFICATES" - Installation script was signed
by more than one certificate.

FWIW, I have Java 6 running on several Vista machines, in IE and Firefox.
While you've undoubtedly hit a problem, there's no fundamental conflict
between Java and Vista. Java v6r3 is Vista compatible. You might have better
luck asking in a Java-oriented forum, such as
