Cannot update Java on Vista Ultimate

I am trying to update from Java 6u7 to 6u11.

I have tried the "Download" from Java.com and also have tried their stand
alone installer. The download "...encounters a problem" and the stand alone
does nothing after I click Run from the UAC window except that the UAC window
goes off.

I have checked the settings on IE7 and on the Java controller from Control
Panel as instructed on the Java trouble shooting page. All settings are as
they should be.

I had the same problem going from update 6 to update 7. I gave a Microsoft
tech control of my system and it took her 2 hours to get update 7 installed.

My system is a Dell Dimension XPS400 with a retail version of Vista
Ultimate. Pentium D 4 Gigs RAM. My system has all the latest Windows
updates installed including those for Office Ultimate 2007. My firewall is
NIS2009 but shutting that off does not help in updating Java.

Java (J2RE) does not appear on my list of programs from Control Panel or
from the list on Windows Install Clean Up utility.

Any solutions will be much appreciated.

I had a problem installing Java (and Office) on 64-bit Vista Ultimate that
was different from yours, but maybe the way I fixed it can help you, too.

Try disabling all non-Microsoft services (run msconfig) and then
download/install. If it works, then one of the non-Microsoft services is the
culprit. In my case, it was a service from Brother that was installed with my
printer software. Once I identified the misbehaving service, I was able to
search on that and find a patch that fixed it.

Hope this helps.

Sheryl,

There were 6 non-Microsoft Services and I deselected all of them but Java
would still not update by either method. I rebooted, saw that the 6 Services
were still off and tried again to install the Java update (11). Not only
would the update not run (as before) but Java also was unable to detect the
version that I do have, Version 6 update 7. Again I confirmed that I have
Java enabled in both locations in IE7 Internet Options.

The new APC power management software will not run without the Java update
installed on my system.

Any other ideas?

When the Microsoft tech took control of your system and was able to install
rev 7, how did she do it? That's your big clue. She obviously identified the
problem and found a workaround. Did you watch what she did?

It sounds like you have something conflicting. If it's not a service, try
some other things. For starters, make sure your anti-virus program is off -
this is what will cause problems, not your firewall. Also try turning off
your startup programs (also from msconfig).

Think about the different things you have installed on your system. Anything
unusual? Which of these could cause an incompatibility?

I know for sure that Java runs fine on Vista because I'm running it. Once I
identified the service that was causing install problems on my system (a
service from my printer), I had no problems installing it.
