Java Install and configuration

Vista Ultimate and Java were preinstalled on my new machine but Java would
not work so I uninstalled Java and reinstalled from Sun site. I've tried
both manual and automatic. Every time Java does it's thing and announces
successful installation! After reboot I go to IE - tools - internet options
- advanced as instructed by both Sun and MS site and there is no Sun Java
listed. It is not under add ins either. Also Java does not work. I can
then go to uninstall programs where it is listed and uninstall Java. Why
can't I install Java?

have you gone to any web pages that use Java? Does the applet appear?
Try http://www.nysun.com/crosswords/subscriber_puzzle.php. If the
crossword puzzle appears then Java is installed and functioning.

Thank you for your response. Yes I've tried numerous times. I get a window
that says this site uses Java with a more info button which then took me to
the MS Java site. I did this on your puzzle site and go the message and
info button but no puzzle. Now the wonder of wonders. I closed that window
to answer this mail but wanting to check the exact wording of the message to
report to you I clicked on the puzzle link again and the puzzle came up. I
looked in IE tools and Java is there. I had looked just before logging onto
this site and it was not there. Is there a time bomb in the Java software?
-- I already said your answer did not help but must now reverse myself. It
works now but an explanaition would sure help.

I've made a discovery. After I logged off from reporting my success I
closed IE and opened a fresh IE window - Java was not there! Then I looked
in programs and saw two Internet Explorers - one marked Internet Explorer and
one marked Internet Explorer (64 bit)

Java works with Internet Explorer. It does not work with Internet Explorer
(64 bit).
It appears I have been using the 64 bit version but the other version came
up when I clicked on your puzzle link.

So now is that a fundamental or is there some way to switch Java to work
with 64 bit IE?

Now THAT's interesting.

I guess you have a 32-bit version of Java. I would have thought that
there would be a 64-bit version also, but...

At http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp they list all available
versions of Java. They have a Windows version, but no reference to 32
or 64 bits. They do have that choice for the Solaris and Linux
operating systems, so I guess they just haven't put out a 64-bit
version for Windows yet.

FWIW, I can take a guess that when he initially installed java he was using
the 32 bit version so it installed in that version only. He can try
launching the 64 bit explorer and going back to the java site and installing
it again with that version running and see if that installs it for the 64
bit version.
