Can't use CD-ROM

My computer has stopped recognizing my DVD/CD-ROM drive. The bios finds the
drive OK, the Windows XP professional version finds the drive OK when it
does a hardware scan. It then says it had a problem installing the hardware.
The Device Manager under System shows the correct identity of the drive, but
shows a problem. When I open the properties widow, under the general tab it
shows

"Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot
find the hardware device. (Code 41)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

This drive has always been working in this computer. I have changed the
drive to a different known working drive with the same result.

What's going on?

Try going to the OEM website of the drive and getting the appropriate driver and software

Check there site for reports of that issue and fixes.

The driver is installed by XP and has been working until recently. The
website for the manufacturer doesn't lend any help.
