Can't use broadband to connect

Used to be able to connect to AOL broadband and then got a
virus which stopped the broadband connection from working.
Re-installed XP pro, downloaded updates, removed the virus
and re-installed AOL v8.0. The cable modem has since been
checked and the line tested and are working correctly,
however, the only way I can connect to the internet now is
by using dial up. The pc talks to the modem to initialise
it, but can't seem to talk at the tcp/ip level. Whats can
I do to fix this?

Help please.

can you ping to your ISP's gateway through the cable modem?any event log
items? is your cable modem interface given a dynamic IP?
