winxp home broadband connection problem

I use ukonline broadband on windows xp home sp2, it connects at 512kbps but I
can not browse the web or ping any websites, it says unknown host. ping
localhost is OK.
How is it possible to have a connection but a simple 'ping google.com'
doesn't work?

I have:
disabled windows sp2 firewall
reinstalled tcp/ip
reinstalled winsock
system restore to just after fresh windows install
reinstalled broadband modem drivers
nothing in event viewer
all tests of modem through ukonline software says 'pass'

ANY IDEAS PLEASE!!

Fabrussio ,

Have you setup the proper DNS servers? Can you ping them successfully?

I can not ping anything other than 127.0.0.1 or localhost.
There is no mention of needing to manually set up DNS servers in their manual.

Thanks

Ping your ip address(one your provider assigned to you)? Ping your gateway?
And check with your provider.
