Can't Update Windows XP Pro

B

BRH

A few weeks ago, I performed a lot of tweaks to WinXP Pro in order to
cut back some of it's overhead and increase overall system performance.
While I was quite successful in accomplishing my goal, a negative side
effect has been that I now cannot perform a Windows Update. (Note that
I want to do a manual update -- I don't want to activate automatic updates).

I get an error message that tells me to turn on a service in order to
enable updating, but it does not tell me the name of the service that
needs to be activated.

I had turned off a lot of services during my tweaking (using "run
services.msc"). I'd like to do a manual windows update on a regular
basis. Can someone tell what service (or services) that I need to turn
back on?

Thanks!

Let me rephrase this, Automatic Updates has to started in the Services
located in Administrative Tools when using Windows Updates website.

I have it set to "manual" under Start-up type. I don't want to Windows
to downlaod/install updates automatically. I want to be able to
exercise some control over the process.

Do you know how I can start this process manually? (ie - Don't have it
default to "automatic" upon system start-up).

Thanks!

Administrative tools>Services>Double-click Automatic Updates>Click Start.

When your finish with Windows Updates, click the Stop Button.

the Automatic Updates in services has to be set to Automatic to get updates.
It won't work if its set to Manual. I always set to Disabled after getting
updates
