Can't update Win Defender

S

Sim E Terry

I have browsed this newsgroup and see a few things that pertain to my
problem but the solutions I have tried don't work. I can't update Win
Defender. The 'Check for Updates' button is available. There is a message
that says "Windows Defender definitions haven't been updated in 22 days.'
I've updated XP at the MS site, uninstalled/reinstalled, follower another
direction that worked for someone else BUT I can't update. When I click the
update button, it grays out, but then nothing happens. My DSL modem flashes
for a second and then nothing. No message or anything that there is a
problem. Any help is appreciated.

I am experiencing the same problem. I do receive an "informational message"
that no new definitions or engine updates available". I just posted a
similar thread to what I think you are indicating. I have Windows XP
Professional installed.

I am also having a problem on a separate computer with Windows 2000
installed - in that case I am getting an error when I attempt to update. I
also tried all the remedies that others suggested but no success.

Microsoft - please help the vast number of us that seem to be having
problems updating the WD defintions - or think we are having problems.

Thanks,

Bill

I had the same problem. My problem was solved after a Windows update. The
definitions can be found on Windows update.

I updated at the MS site and everything is now working correctly. I had
updated earlier and "Windows Installer 3.1" failed on the update. When I
went back this time Windows Installer was updated and Windows Defender then
got all the updates when I clicked 'Check for Updates'. So, make sure you
have the updates to Windows Installer. And all others as well.

Kenneth,

Can you explain what you did to resolve the problem? I am not sure what you
mean by "windows update".

Thanks,

Bill

I was finally able to get to the windows update site. Windows update found 2
Defender definations. Updated software, no problem. Does this mean
everytime I want to update Defender, I have to go to Windows Update site?
Will Defender update itself automatically from now on?

If you have automatic updates enabled (download and install) this will be
seamless.
If you ask to be prompted, you will see the yellow shield to install.
If you do not have automatic updates enabled at all, you will need to visit
windowsupdate.com.
