Prerequisities for running/updating Defender

Configuration as in signature.

What are the prerequisities for successfull Win Defender's updates ?
Administrative or restricted win account ?
Required services to run ?
Required exception rules in the firewall ?

My Win Defender fresh installed claims the definitions weren't updated
for 44 days. I tried to update them. No success. Disabled my firewall
to exclude the probs introduced by firewall. No success.
The service 'background intelligent transfer service' is set to automatic
start
and started. These attempts done as admin.
If firewall was disabled the defender had claimed no application and
defintions were update found. With firewall enabled the update process
finishes with error code
80072efd. Once I got the code 802440a.

How to access the defender's on-demand scanner ?
Possible on the restricted account too ?

I'm really disappointed with windows defender.
Only problems with it.
Seems I will say the defender good bye as quick as
I got the idea to apply it on my system.

Hi Kakii,

Here are the services:
I quote Stu--a regular contributor here:

Start/Run
Type "services.msc"
Click "OK"

Please check the following are started:

1.Automatic Updates
2.Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
3.Cryptographic Services
4.Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
5.System Restore Service

To verify that BITS is correctly configured :

1. Double-click `Background Intelligent Transfer Service.`
2. In the Startup type box, click Manual, and then Apply.
3. Click the `Log On` tab, and then verify that the service is enabled in
every hardware profile that you have listed. If the service is disabled in
one or more hardware profiles, click the hardware profile, Enable, and then
Apply.
4. Click the General tab and then Start.

If BITS starts successfully, visit the Windows Update Web site or the
Microsoft Update Web site to see if you can obtain updates. If it works OK,
change (2.) to automatic.

Hello all -

I have tried the four suggestions listed. After performing the first one, I
get an error message that says: MICROSOFT INSTALLER - "The installation
source for this product is unavailable. Verify that the source exists and
that you can access it."

At one point, between the automatic installer for Defender and Microsoft
Update, I downloaded and installed the same update 17 times for one of them
and 15 for another. The automatic downloader has stopped appearing (thank
God), but the message in the Defender programs says that I haven't updated in
45 days, although when I check for available updates, I get a message that
says all is current and doesn't require updating. Any further suggestions??

First, thanks for your help with this problem.

I have gone to both Windows update and clicked the "check for update" button
in Defender with no results - like I previously stated, I have automatic
updates, too. Today, Defender says it's been 40-some-odd days since my last
update. The first time, I receiced some type of error code (that I forgot to
write down) and then made a second try, which went thru and says that all is
updated. The yellow exclaimation point is still on the button in the quick
lauch tray and the program itself still says the software needs to be
updated. Makes no sense to me.....

Today, I attempted to update the program using the Defender update program
button and received what I believe to be the same error code/message that I
mentioned in yesterday's posting - "...Defender was unable to complete
update: 0x80240016. The device does not recognize the command". I
immediately closed that message box and re-did the update and received the
message that all was updated and nothing needed to be updated. Like I said
earlier, makes no sense to me....
