no real-time or administrator options listed, can't turn on/off

new Dell M6300 notebook, vista ultimate.

single user, type administrator created during initial system setup; the
system never requested creation of a password for the Administrator account.

planned to disable Windows Defender, install f-secure security suite from
ISP (embarq), and just use f-secure spyware.

defender -> options -> tools -> options doesn't display real-time protection
options or administrator options, just option whether to scan system daily.
these are totally absent, not just grayed out.

I had tried this prior to installing f-secure without success, and just went
ahead and installed f-secure. it would make sense to disable real-time
scanning from defender if another real-time scanner was installed, as with
disabling of windows firewall with installation of a different firewall.
however, this was present before installation of f-secure

my only other experience was with a Dell Vostro with Vista business that I
recently purchased for one of my employees. I successfully turned off windows
defender prior to installing AVG anti-malware network edition on that system.

what has happened, and is defender realtime scanning running? windows
defender service is listed as running in services, with automatic startup and
as local system account in services. what is the realtime executable's name
so that I could check in task manager?

Hi David:

I don't have an answer for the WD Options issue and I don't have Vista
Ultimate. However, the Defender processes are MsMpEng.exe and MSASCui.exe.
When you turn off Windows Defender via the Options Menu (Administrator
Options, uncheck the box for Use Windows Defender), the above processes
vanish. If you really want to be sure that WD real-time is off, you could
change the start type for Windows Defender service from automatic to disabled
(highlight the service, click properties).
