Can't update to build .701 successfully? - Please try this

If you're downloading from the Microsoft Download center, but continue to
get the message that your installed version has expired, please consider
trying this:

Delete (or rename, perhaps) \program files\microsoft
antispyware\gcUserData.gcd

do this after shutting down Microsoft Antispyware (well--it won't be
started, will it--since it thinks it is expired!) Then restart Microsoft
Antispyware from the Start menu.

I've got a couple of messages that lead in the direction of some corruption
issue within the installed files, rather than a problem with the downloaded
code, and I'd like to see if this is the correct and most precise fix.

Sorry, fired blank last time!

I am unable to update my copy of antispyware. I have tried the rename delete
suggested below.

Same here. It keep telling me that the software was expired on 31 Dec 2005. I
tried to back date my PC and it do work. I am able to launch the setup
assistant but...it sort of hang after a while.

Jerry - can you try the suggestion I've made to Weberdee, elsewhere in this
thread?

OK - here's a backup suggestion:
Try Start, run, explorer c:\program files\microsoft antispyware

and hit enter.

Double click on:gcasSWUpdater.exe (look for the satellite dish)
See if this triggers an offer of an autodownload of new code.

Bill,

Before I recieved this idea I've got it working.

Bearing in mind that I had previously deleted the file as you suggested
without success. I downloaded the file again and it partly worked ie as part
of the installation process it acknowledged that this was an update but
failed with the expiry notice on startup.
I downloaded again and this time it properly updated and is now running.

I trust this might mean something to you and thanks for your prompt
suggestions

Regards
Peter Harrison

Thanks for the progress report. It just isn't clear what is happening at
this point: Did all of your downloads pull in the same file, or did you
eventually "luck out" and get the right one? Was something "stuck" on your
machine, and eventually the updates succeeded?

I'm looking for a one-button solution for this one, and I sure haven't found
it yet--unless that one button is "repeat the download and install until it
works!"

Bill: Your "Double click on:gcasSWUpdater.exe" suggestion works perfect. I
was able to download latest update and can run Spyware. First suggestion of
Deleting "gcUserData.gcd" had no effect.

Thanks--the file deletion idea was something I'd hoped would be quick and
easy--but it turns out to have been totally off track--thanks.

I do wish I knew why the updater works, but perhaps it is enough that it
does.
