Can't uninstall old software to upgrade

J

Jeff

I am trying to upgrade my Outlook Backup program (an add-
in from MS).

When I try to install, it says I must uninstall the
previous version - which it then tries to do. However,
due to an error (mine), the previous files were deleted
several months ago.

I have used add/remove programs - which removed it from
the installed list.

I have tried to use Outlook to remove the add-in (it is
not listed).

I have done a file search for 'outbak' 'pfbackup' 'outlook
backup' and removed all files with these names.

I have done a regedit, removing every reference
to 'outbak,' 'pfbackup,' and 'outlook backup.'

Still I get the error message - with a twist. It tries to
uninstall, then I get a message from Windows Installer
that says "This action is only valid for products that
are currently installed."

Evidently I am missing at least one reference. Any ideas
on how to make XP Pro realize the program is no longer
installed??

Thanks!

The easiest thing would to *reinstall* the program and then do a proper
uninstall from Add/Remove Programs.

"Don't Panic!"
.

Tried it. Same problem -won't re-install old because it
detects a current installation and tries to uninstall it
before installing - even though it is a re-install.

Surely Outlook is a part of the Office suite of products, in which case you
probably need to repair Office (Click Help/Detect & Repair).
Alternatively, you may get more specialist help in
microsoft.public.office.setup.

If the repair doesn't work or you get the dreaded "This patch package cannot
be found" message, there is probably an installer entry in the registry that
is telling the system Office (and therefore Outlook) is installed. If so,
you can try this:

Click Start/Run then type Regedit and click OK.

1) Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products and locate the product name
(in the right hand panel) There is an entry for every product called
ProductName.
2) Rename the product id key (the long string of numbers in the left-hand
panel) to something starting with an underscore (in case anything goes wrong
and you need to reinstate it).
3) Reinstall the product and then install the upgrade.

Thanks, Brian.

Unfortunately, neither of those two choices worked.
