Can't uninstall disabled Software

P

PamC

I'm having trouble uninstalling a piece of software that
XP has disabled because it has been determined harmful to
the system.

I've tried removing the program folder (the SW does not
appear in the program add/remove list of Control Panel).
No luck.

I've searched for every reference of the SW in the
registry and ini files and removed them, again with no
luck.

I've tried searching in the KB and didn't find an article
re: this issue. No luck.

Please help!
Thanks in advance...

Hey Pam,

What name does xp give for the offending piece of software it is disabling ?

Paul,

I'm almost embarrased to say this--Plextor CD Creator 4.

There's a problem with this SW in that Roxio bought out
the company that previously made it, so I can't just
download the latest update; they want me to purchase the
whole software package. (The original version was bundled
with my CDRW.) I've tried Plextor's uninstall program,
but since the program wasn't fully installed in the first
place, it doesn't work. And I'm not about to spend $ on
SW I probably won't use anyway just to get rid of that
damn error message. ^_~

I'm just wondering about which bit its disabling, normally xp would disable
device drivers it doesn't like.

If you go into device manager, does the cdrw drive look ok, or does it have
a red cross or a yellow exclamtaion mark next to it.
To get there go into

control panel/system/hardware/device manager

All hardware devices are fine (no conflicts, etc.). It's
not saying it doesn't like the driver(s), it's not liking
the SW itself.

"Devices or applications disabled.
'CD Recording Software' will cause Windows to become
unstable. Windows has prevented these drivers from
loading."

Which is confusing, since it's the SW causing the
problem, not a hardware driver... (and this problem did
start immediately after attempting to install said SW).

See if you can find any drivers related to this software by runnig the
driver signature verification tool

start/run
sigverif

It will list all unsigned drivers on your system.

Do you mean, none show up unsigned, sigverif reports unsigned drivers
(unless you go and look in its logfile)

All drivers are showing up as signed in the log file.
Should I be looking in the section of unscanned files?

Don't you get a window pop up after it finishes verifying entitled
"Signature Verification Results",
and the phrase "The following files have not been digitally signed....." and
a windows with a list of files ?

No.

But I was able to find the file in question doing an
Advanced search on all *.sys files in c:/windows,
including subfolders.

Thanks! Problem fixed.
