Can't successfully install anti-virus software

I've tried installing both ETrust and F-Secure anti-virus software w/o
success. ETrust keeps prompted me to autodownload updates, and even though I
do withough any error messages, it keeps asking me to download every time I
launch.
After installing F-Secure, the program is no where to be found. On my
system tray I have an Advanced Settings dialog for F-Secure, and I have a
bunch of files on my machine, but can't find the actual program or
executable.

Windows Security Center says I don't have any anti-virus. We started out
with free McAfee that came with the computer, uninstalled, then tried ETrust.
When we couldn't get that to run, we uninstalled, and tried F-Secure. We've
installed both from their respective web sites. It's frustrating because we
don't get any error messages or any indication why either program cannot run.

Any ideas? Their websites are horrible as far as getting assistance,
especially ETrust's!

Thanks.

You've obviously got a problem. Perhaps made worse by adding more
Anti-Virus miss-fires on top of McAfee. If I was you, I would do a Sys
Restore back a few days when McAfee was installed. Then uninstall the
McAfee and reboot (Staying off the Internet). Go through Add/Remove
programs and make sure all McAfee products are uninstalled. They do
sometimes install other components besides the Anti-Virus package.
Then bring up TaskMgr and make sure no legacy McAfee services are
running on the machine. Once you are confident McAfee is gone, then
install your preferred Anti-Virus and reconnect to the Internet for def
updates, etc. In postings like yours Machine make and model can help
to diagnose your problem(s).

Follow the other advice first about totally removing McAfee but another
problem you could be having is that the system could be infected. Virus
infection can interfere with the installation of AV products.

For viruses, start with Trend Micro’s Sysclean. Download it and the
signature file. Turn off system restore, boot into safe mode and run
sysclean. Boot back into normal mode and run a full AV scan with your
normal AV program. Then turn system restore back on.

You should also regularly run at least two of these online scans in
addition to your regular up to date AV program:
