Anti-virus question

We have just started using WindowsXP.
I have a login window set up for my Wife and a separate login window for
me.
We are using F-secure anti-virus.
In one log in window the anti virus shows it is turned on and working.
When in the second log in window the anti-virus is in an off state and
cannot be turned on.
I have to re-install the anti-virus in the second log in window to get it
working, and then it will show the anti-virus is turned off in the first log
in window.
My question is: Does the anti-virus still protect the whole computer, even
when it shows the anti-virus is turned off when in the second log in window.
