Can't start Windows

Jerber1

Help! I have a home built PC with an ASUS P5K-ESeries motherboard. Caught
some type of virus. When i turn it on i get to the "We apologize" screen
where a choice is given to start normally, in safe mode, etc. I can not
change this screen to the other modes, so it just continuously tries to start
normally. I have tried putting both the XP disc in and the ASUS disc in and
have hit every button F1 - F12. What else can I do?

Do you know that you "caught some type of virus" because your
anti-malware software told you that your computer was infected? Then let
your anti-malware software try to remove the virus. If the software is
not successful, contact the software's technical support.

Yes, my anti -malware was working properly. It indicated I had a virus. I ran
a couple of scans, and then tried to reboot. Now the problem described has
happened. I'm stuck in an endless cycle of the computer trying to start
normally.

Can you start your computer in Safe Mode with Networking?

If you can: Contact your anti-malware software's technical support and
ask for help.

If you cannot: You will have to remove your infected hard drive and
install it into a malware-free computer that has effective anti-malware
software. Use the good computer to scan your infected hard drive.

you must try to set
up your bios to boot
from cd, then boot
with the winxp cd.

then access the repair
recovery console and at
the disk prompt run the
following commands:

chkdsk
fixboot
bootcfg /rebuild
fixmbr

the exit and reboot
normally again.

-------
if however, you cannot
boot with the winxp cd,
then you will need a
different course of action.

Please post a copy of the Stop Error report.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Keep pressing the F8
key during Start-Up and select option - Disable automatic restart on
system failure. Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure.
Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

Have you tried Last Known Good Configuration?

What do you have by way of a Windows XP CD?

What is your computer make and model?

What was the name of the "virus"?

What anti-virus and anti-spyware software is installed?

Do you have data files on the computer you need to recover?

Hope this helps.

Can you explain how that procedure removes a malware infection?

And even if it could (it cannot), how do you know that the service pack
of the OP's install CD is the same as the service pack of his
installation? (You don't.)

the questions you should
instead be asking yourself
are:

1) where is the proof that
the issue is the result of an
infection and is not simply
the result of an issue with
the disk and or file system?

2) since when is the winxp
repair/ recovery console
dedicated to a specific version
of winxp?

------------

as i have stated numerously,
it is easy to mis interpret disk
and file system issues and
hardware malfunctions as
infections.

it is not to say that infections
do not create the above issues,

however, other factors can contribute
to the above as well.

Some research might be a good thing to do before reaching any conclusion
as the most promising route to a solution.
