Can't send or receive through Windows Mail

A few days ago I had to reload Windows Vista on my PC because my internet was
not working properly. Once I did, the internet worked fine but now I had to
reload my mail program. I followed all the steps to set up Windows mail to
the e-mail account however I am experiencing some frustrating difficulties.
Whenever I click on send/recieve..I get an error message telling me some
errors occurred but their is no explaination in the details box. I also do
not recieve anything. If I close the program and reopen it, then I recieve my
e-mails and whatever I had sent preiviously has now been sent. Any ideas on
how to resolve this issue?
Thanks in advance.

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
Outlook Express and should be uninstalled.

Click on Tools, then Accounts, then your email account, then Properties. If
there is no check mark in the box before Include this account when receiving
mail or synchronizing, click on this box and then Apply. Click on OK and
then Close.

Click on Tools, then Options, then Send. If there is no check mark in the
box before Send messages immediately, click on this box and then Apply.
Click on OK.

Thanks Robert...I did as you instructed but both boxes were already checked.
I just bought another two years of NIS and am reluctant to now just delete
it! Besides, prior to my having to reinstall Windows the other day, NIS
worked just fine with my e-mail program so why does it not work now? In fact,
I'm finding a number of my programs that I am reloading are coming up with
problems...i.e. problems with VISTA,,,but there weren't any problems before?

The problems with Norton programs come from something they seldom
do, so you probably wouldn't see problems immediately.

Presumably, you can always reinstall NIS, so what would it cost you to
try Windows Mail with NIS uninstalled? Perhaps 30 minutes of your time?

Wasn't the NIS...I uninstalled it and still the receive/send button gives me
the same message that there were some unidentified errors. Messages do not
arrive while I have the program open...but if I shut it down and reopen
it...they arrive? Sending seems to be working?

It is quite possible that your mail account was corrupted by NIS.
After uninstalling NIS, be sure to delete your mail account, restart
Windows Mail, then recreate that account.

Hi Rick, Same thing happening here. Here is what I did to break it. I bought
a display laptop from a retail store. It had already been setup with a user
folder with the store's name. I did not want that so I added another computer
user account with my name. I then copied all the data and subfolders
belonging to the folder that was setup at the store, and pasted it into my
new user account. It wrote over every file in the new folder. I then deleted
the store's user account which left me with a guest account and my new
account. When I fisrt logged on, I got a error saying that Windows mail could
not load properly and I must setup accounts again. I did this and now get
that empty error message when usung the send and receive button. I can send
mail ok, and can receive if using the tools\receive\all menu. It works the
first time when you open the program, but will not work after that. I have
not found a solution.

OK, I have found a fix for my problem. I went into the
1. c:\users\yourusername\
2. Then click on the organize menu, select folder options , View tab, and
select show hidden folders.
3. You should now see a folder named Appdata
4.open Appdata folder
5. open folder Local
6. open folder Microsoft
7. open folder windows mail
8. again make sure to show hidden folders
9.delete the local folders
10. close all open folders, restart windows mail.
11. All accounts have beeen deleted now. You will have to setup your
accounts again.
My windows mail now works.

PS If you get an outbound message stuck in your outbox, even after deleting
it seems to be stuck in there somewhere and gives error messages when you
send and receive.. Then google for wmutil.zip. Download , unzip and run it.
It will repair this problem.

This should do it!
