Can't send messages

I can't send messages from windows mail. They sit in my outbox. Here is the
error message.

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Subject 'Re: What every office needs . .', Account:
'mail.charter.net', Server: 'mail.charter.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

When you got that error message, were you sending from home, or from
a laptop away from home?

Which antivirus are you using? Some of them are not very compatible
with Windows Mail.

Here is another error message
An unknown error has occurred. Subject '', Account: 'mail.charter.net',
Server: 'mail.charter.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '421 charter.net
connection refused from [70.60.125.114]', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server
Error: 421, Error Number: 0x800CCC67

Yes, but I need to know if you were connected to your home ISP
(Charter) when you got that error message. Or was the laptop
sending from a different location, using a Wi-Fi hotspot?

Charter says you were connecting from a RoadRunner connection.
Charter does not allow you to use their SMTP server unless your
Internet connection is through Charter.

As a general rule, the owner of the SMTP server must match the
entity providing the Internet connection.

The available workarounds are as follows:

1. Use webmail for sending (via your browser).
2. Ask your home ISP if they have a port other than '25' for SMTP. I don't think
Charter does. Cable companies are very bad about accommodating travelers.
3. Substitute the SMTP server belonging to your away-from-home connection.
This is a bit tricky, but if you want to go that route, I can provide more details.
4. If you frequently send from multiple locations, get a free Gmail account,
configure it for POP access, and use it for your sending chores.
Gmail uses port 465 for SMTP, which is not blocked like port 25 is.

Thanks for the help. I did go ahead and set up a gmail account. That seemed
the least cumbersome.
