can not receive emails. message:

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Account: 'home', Server: 'mail.charter.net', Protocol: POP3,
Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

tried earlier post of SMTP to 587 did not help.

That fix was specifically for BT customers.

You may be getting screwed by a Vista/WM incompatible
anti-virus program such as Norton or McAfee in which case
uninstall it entirely and use Avast instead
(don't install (or disable) the superfluous email scanning component.)

Hi - I've just changed my SMTP to 587 (from 25) - am with BT & I have been
able to send an e-mail (at long last) - but what does it mean by changing
these numbers?

It means you have changed to a different port.

Port

A hardware- or software-based interface used to transfer information between
a computer and other devices. Hardware ports are physical connections that
are visible on the outside of the computer. Software ports are the numbered
gateways in programs that software programs use to exchange information.

For the record, it was Julian who steered you in the right direction.
Welcome to the world of Norton-free and McAfee-free antivirus!
Be sure to install a compatible antivirus like the free version of Avast.
